You can consider Active Directory (AD) as a big database(structured container) which includes all domain objects(computers, users, resoruces,..). For example, if a domian user tries to log on to its domain the user's membership must be checked somewhere under the domain. In this scenario, the place where that kind of information comparison occurs is Domain Controller, the computer which includes AD.
